Our Water Buffalo
The Animals at the Heart of Kampkreek Dairies
The Heart of Kampkreek
Water buffalo are at the centre of Kampkreek Dairies. Our herd is an important part of who we are and the products we create here on the farm. These remarkable animals are a unique part of our family story — and the beginning of what makes Kampkreek a little different.

What Makes Buffalo Milk Different?
There’s something a little different about water buffalo milk. Naturally rich and creamy, it has a distinctive character that makes it a favourite for creating dairy products.
Compared with conventional cow’s milk, water buffalo milk is naturally higher in fat and protein. It also contains more calcium, contributing to its rich texture and making it particularly well suited for products like cheese and other dairy favourites.
For this comparison, we’re looking at typical nutritional values per 100 mL of water buffalo, cow’s, and goat’s milk. Nutritional values can vary depending on the animal, breed, season, and processing.

WATER BUFFALO MEAT NUTRITION
How Does Water Buffalo Meat Compare?
Water buffalo isn’t just interesting, it’s also a surprisingly lean source of protein.
We think water buffalo is an exceptional red meat, offering many of the nutritional benefits associated with red meat while being naturally lean, with a fat content that can be lower than poultry.
For this comparison, we’re using nutritional information from Health Canada, comparing a standard serving of roasted turkey (back meat), roasted chicken (back meat), roasted beef (composite cuts), and roasted water buffalo.

Common Questions
A Little More About Our Buffalo
Find answers to common questions about our water buffalo.
No. Our water buffalo are housed in a barn where they have free access to fresh feed and water.
Yes! Water buffalo are naturally found in warmer, more tropical environments. Here at Kampkreek, they are housed in a barn where we can help keep them comfortable through Ontario’s changing seasons.
We are not certified organic. However, our animals are raised without hormones or drugs.
Our water buffalo stay comfortable through the winter in the barn, where they generate plenty of their own body heat. During the summer, the sides of the barn are opened to allow plenty of airflow, while the barn provides shade from the sun.
Our water buffalo are fed hay and other forages grown right here on our farm, along with a small amount of corn to give the meat a nice flavour finish. A simple, wholesome diet helps produce both the rich, creamy milk used in our dairy products and the high-quality meat we’re proud to offer.
